ideas from Pinterest - for superhero stories!

I didn't mention in my Writer Stag post, but I've recently started writing superhero stories as well as fairy tales and contemporary runaways. ('Superhero' is totally a genre, 'kay??)

So here is the superhero/villain-themed next installment (first post here) of 'ideas from Pinterest'. I have scoured that soul-sucking site for months, gathering the required information/ideas for this semi-series of posts... do not waste my labours.

(does anyone here actually write superhero stories?)

Edit: As Lisa points out in the comments, mixed-gender roommates would be very non-standard. If you want the dating twist - which is not required, it might be nice to have a story without romance - you could have a mixed-gender student share house.

--{well I'm not going to walk there}--
"You can ALL fly and I'm the only one who can't. Can you not argue about who's going to carry me while I'm standing right here??"

--{...insurance rates}--
"You superhero types are constantly driving my insurance rates up with your destruction. I wouldn't complain [much] if you were at least fighting supervillains, but you're usually just fighting each other!"
(definitely the [disguised] superhero's new landlady!)

--{is it possible you had a pre-existing condition?}--
"I volunteered for a super-soldier program and I'm the only one that's shown any abilities in response to the drugs. Now you're trying to tell me I was in the placebo group??"

--{should have picked someone else}--
"You took me hostage for your bank robbery but you should probably have picked aaanyone else. *telekinetically trolls them until they turn themselves in to the police*"

--{terrible at this secret identity thing}--
"Once we caught you climbing in the window of our mutual office?? No, sure, that's a compleeetely plausible reason. If anyone asks, we'll tell them you were here and working hard. With your dorky glasses and crazy broad shoulders and mysterious scrapes and bruises, of course you're just a regular office worker! *coughs*"

--{behind-the-scenes crew, couldn't have done it without you}--
"You're a superhero, which is awesome, but as your best friend that leaves me with a lot of responsibilities. Doing your homework. Forging sick notes from your parents. Fetching bundles of clothes from behind bins in alleys. Carrying a spare costume everywhere. Oh, and the washing. Being your best friend is actually a lot of work?? and I hope you appreciate that."

--{best friends?}--
"No, I don't want a chocolate, I just watched you take them from that girl scout - no, I'm not mad you didn't come to my birthday party, I'm perfectly aware you were in jail, I put you there - yes, I received your gift, and returned it to the museum - that's someone else's coffee, I don't want it and just stOP ACTING LIKE WE'RE BEST BUDDIES OKAY"

--{when your power is public knowledge}--
"I was born with the facial birthmark signifying superpowers and I have to put up with supervillains harrassing me, I shouldn't have to- no, no autographs - you don't approve of superheroes? too bad, lady - I will not demonstrate anything in the shopping centre - all I wanted was eggs would you people leave me alone."

--{maybe would have preferred not to know?}--
"Recently I've gained the ability to tell when someone is lying. You've been my best friend from childhood, but everything you're saying to me - even your name - is a lie. What's up with that??"

--{not the intended outcome}--
"You told me there would be no side effects."

>--{danger levels}--
"I can measure how dangerous people are just by looking at them - regular kid is 1, trained man with an assault rifle would be about 7. You're the new kid at school and you don't look like much but you're a 10??"

--{first time getting shot}--
"Exactly how and when did you find out you're bulletproof?"

--{family dinners}--
"Family dinner night again, and Mum's posted bail (our latest showdown got you arrested, but to be fair, you'd just melted a museum) so we can have - and I quote - 'a civil, sisterly conversation, at the table instead of flying around dressed in spandex'."

Plus a random slightly relevant?? driblet from my recent life:
I was playing chess (circular chess, actually, with three people) and my brother said he should have archers?? So I replaced my bishops with Hawkeye tokens?? Sadly I'm the only one in my family who knows that kind of stuff... so no one said I see what you did there. :( (because there are two Hawkeyes? and the second is Kate Bishop?)

Which of these was your favourite? Do you write superhero stories? Do you want to talk about a completely random thing?? (or maybe circular chess?) (and SOMEONE please tell me you see what I did there ;)

  1. Haha I'm insanely in love with the one with the two being roommates! Please tell me you aren't writing it because I want to! That was so awesome I need it! And I have never actually written a superhero story though I have plotted in my mind :D

    1. YESS YOU WRITE THAT ONE, LISA, AND THEN I CAN READ IT! (basically I just really want to read it, and if I don't have to write it, so much the better??) :D

    2. Yay it sounds so awesome and so does everything else I love them all so much also the first post (which I checked out from the link). But okay, how do you think these can be dating and be roommates at the same time because aren't roommates girl-girl or boy-boy...?

      Delete
    3. Oh. yeah. I have no experience with that - it's a college thing, isn't it? - but yeah, it would make sense for roommates to be the same gender. I didn't think about that. >_< But I know students sometimes live in share houses (everyone has a room and they share the kitchen etc) and those are mixed-gender. That could still be a close enough life that they'd both notice each other's scrapes and bruises.

      Good point - thanks!

    4. Yes living in the same house would be possible xD Great now we get to choose.

I really like the 'supervillain becomes superworried parent' one too. Have you watched Maleficient because that happened in there xD She was trying to keep Aurora alive and well so that her curse would come true xD

      Delete
    5. I haven't seen Maleficent - are you telling me she was sort of going: "NO you can't die NOW, I've got a curse ready for when you're 18, it would be WASTED if you die now"??

    6. Totally xD you should see it. :)

  2. OH MY GOODNESS YAAAS. I have recently become mildly obsessed with some superhero characters that I've invented and THEY'RE SO FUN. I LOVE all of these prompts and wow they're so great and I just want to write them all now thank you very much. XD I particularly like the behind-the-scenes crew one. XP

YOU MUST TELL ME ABOUT YOUR SUPERHERO STORIES. I am aching for allll of the superheroes and I don't even know why SO TELL ME. *sits forward eagerly*

(also I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE XD)

    1. Superheroes ARE such fun?? Write them all (and let me read them!!) and you're very welcome. xD

I haven't exactly written much of my superhero stories... the ideas are still - fermenting. The character I've started with has the power of augmentation - which basically means she can dial other characters' powers waaay up, or down to zero - and she's being used by a semi-shady government division* to control captured superpowered individuals
(*think SHIELD or ARGUS. because the semi-shady gov. division seems to be a necessary part of a superhero story??)

(and you see what I did? I'M SO HAPPY.) (I spent the whole game busting with the knowledge of my fangirly weirdness, I mean, clever wordplay, but couldn't say anything!)

    2. Ooh yes that sounds SO COOl. *signs up to read this when it's past fermenting and writing and all that jazz because yes please*

    3. *will keep you in mind*

What's your favourite superhero character? (that you've created, I mean, although you can answer the question both ways!)

  3. Oh my word these are so cool!! Thank you so much for sharing! I'm planning a Batgirl retelling, which I guess kinda qualifies as a superhero story :) So I'll be coming back to this post!

  4. Um, you can bet that if superhero stories aren't a genre yet, they will be very soon! These are all really good, non-cliche ideas. I love that!

    1. Oh, and I saw what you did there! Epicness!

    2. I love it when cliches twist to become new things! And since these superhero prompts are all from Pinterest, you'd think there'd be stories (and a whole genre) involving them already. *scowls at writers who haven't bothered writing the stories yet* *realises that includes me* *scowls at myself hardest of all* (I just want to read them allll, but they don't exist yet!)

I tried to explain to my brother, but trailed off pretty soon. "I'm replacing my bishops with Hawkeyes, because I want archers obviously, and I'm doing bishops and not knights or something because even though the picture is of Clint Barton, there's actually two Hawkeyes, and... yeah. At least I realise my own epicness..."

  5. I looooovvvvveeeeee all of these ideas! XD
If you write a book including all of them somehow I will bake you cookies!!!! XD

  7. Eeeek! These are so much fun, Jem! I REALLY like the roommate one. And the villain turned parent! Hahaha. Those are great. :D Lots of good story inspiration here. (I don't actually write super hero stories myself, but I love the hidden identities thing. So yeah. I enjoyed this muchly.)

    And by the way...

YOUR NEW BLOG LAYOUT IS AWESOME!! I love, love, love your header! The font you used, the colors...just everything. It's so pretty!!! :D

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed this despite not writing superhero stories, Miss March! And I'M SO HAPPY YOU SAID YOU LIKE THE NEW LAYOUT. I really wasn't sure - by itself, the owl looks reeeally orange, and I didn't think it would go with pink... Thank you!! :D

      Delete
    2. Oh no! I think the owl looks just fine with pink. Seriously. It's lovely!! <3 :D

    3. That's good - thank you, Miss March! :D

  8. Jemmmmmmm!!! You know how much I enjoyed the last installment (Please keep doing these!! Please?????) and this one was even better!!! I loved all of them, but... I think my favorites were... the one where the villain becomes the parent to the superhero kid and the one where the villain wants to be best buddies to the superhero!!! So precious!!! Someone must write these asap!! (Probably me... *sigh*)

    1. I'll definitely continue, Kate! (After all, I've already collected the ideas... I just have to transfer them from a [somewhat sprawling] Pinterest board to a post.) Those two particular ideas are certainly ones I'd love to read - and I'm sorry but yes, that does mean you have to write them (unless we can persuade some other, more gullible, writer to do it for us??) xD

    2. "You told me there would be no side effects." *laughs buckets* Sounds like something my family would say....

Makes me want to go write a superhero story...

    3. @Jem

Yay!!! I love this series so much!!!

      I like the second plan!!!

    4. @Julian [sorry I missed your comment!]
Your family sounds cool... and making you want to write a superhero story was my secret plot. So... it worked, mwahaha. ;P

      @Kate Marie
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the series! (And I vote for the second plan too... but until we can manage it, I guess we're stuck with writing them ourselves. Sigh. ;)

  9. I LOVE SUPERHERO STORIES BUT HAVE NEVER REALLY TRIED TO WRITE THEM MYSELF MAYBE I SHOULD GIVE IT A GO?????????
(that was a joke I definitely will)

    1. YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY GIVE A SUPERHERO STORY A GO, ESTHER (Slightly off-topic, but it seems like they're all the rage this NaNo?) And I'd love to read it when you've finished! I got into comics fairly recently, but I haven't found many superhero novels, which is disappointing.

    2. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHA Haha ha. um. I may have just done exactly that... I mean, um. Cinderella can be a superhero story right? RIGHT??? RIGHT?!?!?! Meh too bad, it's already in the works *EVIL LAUGHTER*

I think it may have something to do with the fact that so many superhero movies are coming out, and even some books. LIKE MARISSA MEYER'S NEW BOOK RENEGADES FOR EXAMPLE I HAVEN'T FINISHED READING IT YET BUT I LOVE IT SO FAR SO um yeah.

OOOH OKAY SO I MAY COME TO REGRET THIS BECAUSE I HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE CLAMOURING AT ME TO WRITE MORE ALREADY BUT IF YOU GIVE ME YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS I'LL SEND YOU THE PROLOGUE AND FIRST CHAPTER. just try not to scream if you hate it, okay?

      It IS annoying isn't it?

      Delete
    3. I haven't gotten hold of Renegades yet - but my library should be getting it, right?? (I actually didn't think of that... I guess I'm too used to books raved about by bloggers being books my library doesn't have.)

EXCELLENT let me just read all about this superhero Cinderella. *starts clamouring*
