One Quirk Later #17 || staring at the glass (#16)

Hello to the NaNo-ers! Hello to Christine's non-NaNo-ers! Hello to the people who are writers but are simply Haven't for a while and really want to get back to it but also feel overwhelmed and possibly drained!

(High five if you're in the last category.)

Hopefully, whatever category you're in, you'll enjoy breaking up your writing routine (like mine: "not writing". it's a simple routine.) by adding in a Quirk.

One Quirk Later: Prompt #16

Hello hello hello! I don't know why but it feels like a long time since I have been Quirk-ing with you all?? a situation which must be rectified!

("Jem," you say, "if it feels like a long time, that's because the last Quirk was in July. That's three months ago. That is a long time." Shhhh dear ones. Let me gently muffle your entirely valid comments and bibbity bobbity boo us straight to the next Quirk!)

One Quirk Later: Prompt #16

*handwave-y towards my Pinterest*

Something about that kid is fascinating to me. I have not yet decided where on the alignment chart he looks like he would sit, but I do believe he would drink his juice either from a glass or a bowl. No in-between.

To join in with the One Quirk Later madness:

  1. Write whatever this picture prompt inspires you to!
  2. Post it on your blog!
  3. Link back to this post—there's the image up the top of the post, too, if you'd like to use that.
  4. Comment on one of my posts so I can come and read your amazing writing!
  5. And I'll drop links to everyone's stories in the next post. (:

On the last Saturday of October (or, you know... sometime around then??) I will post my Quirk in response to this prompt. But you can use any Quirk prompt (<= look, there's a bunch there!) at any time! Just let me know if you do, so I can come and read it and squeal. 💛

Is anyone doing NaNo next month? I feel like I ask this every time it's November or Camp, and always accompanied by a "...because I'm not" 😅 But if you are that's cool and I wish you the best! Go forth! Slay these first-draft beasts! Be not distracted by the fluffy plot bunnies! Steel your heart and chase your dream!

What else is up with everyone? Personally, I've just heard that one of my favourite musical groups is going to be doing two concerts in Australia—like, the other side of Australia, but sTILL. And I want to go SO BAD but also I anticipate tickets vanishing as soon as they go on sale, so. That's what I'm stressing over at the moment. xD

Also I've decided I might want to live in the city (because ✨convenience✨) and this is causing a lot of identity questioning. I have never lived in a city. Why would I want to live near People.

(I do not believe this Mr Bennet encapsulated the spirit of his book character very well... but this gif is an excellent mood.)

One Quirk Later: Prompt #15

Today we're up to prompt number FIFTEEN in our Quirks, and it feels like such a lot! I know I'm gathering a nice little collection of pieces, and I hope you're happy with what you're adding to your portfolio too!

I haven't always been on time (oops), but I haven't missed a month yet, and honestly it's about all the fiction I'm writing at the moment, so I'm determined I'll persist.

And if you're still here, I'll assume you're enjoying the Quirks too. xD If you have any suggestions or themes or genres or aesthetics or anything for future Quirks, let me know!

"Jem pls. why so many siblings and/or threats. what is your Pinterest like if this is what you're pulling from it." <- you, probably. Well this week!! we have threats!! but don't let that stop you from putting siblings in if you so desire.

Or mix it up! that's partly what the Quirks are for, too.

*waves nose vaguely at my Pinterest*

hmmmm cottage in the woods. that always gives murder vibes, right?

To join in with this madness:

Now as I said last post, this is scheduled and I'm not really here! I'm an apparition. I am in fact in Canberra, which I can say with fair certainty despite not being there as I write this that I am freezing and refusing to go outdoors. Fun times xD This is me stretching my comfort zone!! it's great!!

What's been happening in your life? What are you currently reading? I want to read some nonfiction on personal finances bc I have zero plan, I just stare at my bank account like "numbers yay". xD What are you listening to? Two of my friends have recently been receptive to my recommendations of a favourite artist, so that's fun! Give me your recommendations!

oooh I hope I get my story posted for Quirk #14 before this goes up, that would be embarrassing xD It's uh... not written yet. The story, that is. oop.

One Quirk Later #14 || also the story for #13 oops

And here we go! a tad late but who's counting!

(me. I am counting. I am stressing and that's not what I'm here for, why do I do this to myself, I keep promising myself I am going to be organised and I never am?? treachery. treachery from within the ranks. the betrayal, how can I go on. *dramatically swoons* *into a nap*)

One Quirk Later #13

One day I'll write a post that's not Quirk-related.

...today is not that day.

I mean! I'm having fun, and I hope you are too! Buuut just to make sure you're still having fun, we have more angst potential in this month's Quirk.

What can I say, apparently we have a brain cell in common, and that brain cell is hungry for 1) angst; 2) siblings.

One Quirk Later: Prompt #13

*waves hands vaguely at my Pinterest* you like wasting time finding writing inspiration, yeah??

I have to say, I'm having a great time making these! and thinking of the delicious story bits I'll get to read from you lot, ehehe

...I mean *coughing* the thought of what you might do with the Quirk definitely doesn't affect what I pick. Definitely not.

But if you happen to like angst, and I happen to like angst, well, it's just good value to go for that, yeah?

...There definitely isn't a conspiracy here.

One Quirk Later #12

“A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early; he arrives precisely when he means to.”

...actually, that implies that I meant to be writing this on a Tuesday morning when I specifically set rules for myself that prompts would go up on the first Saturday of the month. And I did not mean for this to happen.

Life's just... life, you know? Nothing huge happening, but the everyday does drag your energy down a bit sometimes.

Also, I may have forgotten I had to put this post up.

One Quirk Later #11 || the Voted Most Likely tag

Don't the months just fly around fast!

Without further ado (and don't these intros seem to be getting short... may as well get to the good bit, I suppose), may I point you, o discerning guests and those without anything better to do on a fine Monday, towards the March Quirk prompt.

One Quirk Later #10 || a short post to match February (?)

So I thought "oh, this is the tenth Quirk prompt?? wow, I've probably passed a year of Quirks now!" Leaving aside, of course, the fact that fully half the time I've missed posting. So I checked my old posts and the very first Quirk (labeled "oh no I have done a thing") was in May 2020??

When even was May 2020.

This month's prompt is fairly... urban? I know some of mine lean towards fantasy (that's my bias), but hopefully this one can be used for contemporary, mystery, dystopian, and/or anything really.

Will I still give mine fantasy elements? Who can say. But it's definitely a non-zero chance.

Drumroll, please:

please admire my Pinterest. Also I'm sorry if the Quirk is blurry!! I do not know what is wrong!

Quirk #7 | plus an About Me tag where I avoid all answers

It's the first Saturday of March, which means a Quirk prompt!

Because some of you have been feeding me ridiculously good short stories and this has encouraged me, like the stray cat I am, to keep coming back.

I'm feeling like this week's prompt could contain a lot of emotion, if that's the direction you wish to take?? (It mentions blood. I know there are several of you who will be happy to hear this.)

One Quirk Later #6 (plus a Christmas tag, because of course)

Ollo ollo ollo.

Did I ever say when in January I would return, no, I didn't think so-

I maaay however have said "January" and not "February". Possibly. Oops.

You are all amazing for having got involved in my Quirks last year, whether you wrote or read or both, and I do hope you'll bear with me as I get settled back in with blogging!

One Quirk Later: Prompt #6

Individual images can be found on my Pinterest boards. At this point I have no memory of which ones, but I do know I spent a long time curating them, so go and have a look.

One Quirk Later #5

Look, I know my "how has another month gone already?" screeching is going to get old real quick, but...

...how has another month gone already.

(Also I am late-ish with this post because I went to a friend's wedding on Saturday and got home after 11pm. I love you all but not enough to stay up past midnight. I'm an old lady and need to sleep.)

One Quirk Later #4

Allo allo allo! It’s already time for our next Quirk, guys. Are you surprised? Because I am. Where did August go.

I’m kind of nervous about this one, to be honest, because I actually put it together several weeks ago and have since been just. staring at it. And a brilliant idea has not yet whacked me in the face. NO PRESSURE OR ANYTHING, JEM.

But hey! What’s life for if not taking risks. hahahaaa no one ever accused me of taking THAT as my motto.

(...Every one of those pictures tickles my fancy, though?? why is my brain not jumping up and down saying "OOH OOH PICK ME"?? rude.)

One Quirk Later #3

I absolutely definitely have not been bingeing The Silver Eye. Or listening to Stay Gold on repeat. Or reading Batfam fanfiction.

Definitely not.

I will, however, admit to a) picking up my one-volume Lord of the Rings for a reread; b) joining a basketball team; and c) getting called back into the library for the first time in four months! (I mean. It's still going to be very spotty because they shouldn't need casuals due to decreased hours. But I do have a few shifts!)

Could I have these posts drafted out well beforehand?? well. Yes. But where would be the stress fun in that.

...all that to say. TIME FOR A QUIRK.

One Quirk Later | Flash Fiction Prompt #2

There was supposed to be a post between this and the last writing prompt one.

I lost track of time.

For three weeks.

It's a thing that happens.

But! In the meantime, I have named my flash fiction series! (something I had been worried about because me + naming things = pANIC)

*drum roll* Introducing:

...because I consider these short stories to be fun little quirks on my writing journey, and I'm finding that they're all turning out quite quirky tone-wise, too.

One Quirk Later: Prompt #2

(Individual pictures can be found on my boards e. aes | brown, c. girls and b. fugitives.)

I've had an idea or two while assembling this prompt... hopefully one works itself into a story before next week's post....

Now to, once more, request your presence...

To join in with this madness:

  1. Write whatever this picture prompt inspires you to! (You don't have to use all the pictures.)
  2. Post it on your blog! (Unless you prefer to keep it private, which is fine too.)
  3. Link back to this post—and there's a link-up image now, too!

  4. Comment on one of my posts so I can come and read your amazing writing!!
(I am really really excited about this step...)
  5. I'll list links to everyone's stories in the next month's post!

• • • • • • •
What do you think about this prompt? (and the name?) Is there something particular you'd like to see in a future prompt? I will take requests into consideration!

And if you're still interested in last month's prompt, go ahead! Drop your thoughts or any links to stories into the comments, and know that I will be very very excited.
• • • • • • •
Special shout-out to Kate Marie, who wrote a flash fiction based on last month's prompt! I have not managed to fIND it yet (*shakes wheelie walker at technology*), but I know it's going to be awesome.
(Kate, it is on Story and Dark Chocolate, right? because I'm getting an error message :'(

UPDATE: Thanks to Samantha for pointing out Kate Marie's new blog! Kate is now at Stories In My Soul, and you can find her flash fiction for last month right here and it is amazing and YOU SHOULD ALL READ IT IMMEDIATELY it is so heartwarming and funny. READ IT. READ IT NOW.

Flash Prompt #1 || oh no, I have done a Thing

As I said in my last post, I'd like to get into writing more flash fiction and short stories. There are so many ideas out there, just waiting for attention! So many characters swirling in the mists of our minds, with the potential to form into living, breathing, crying characters if we would only give them attention!

Also it's shorter than writing a novel, and you can leave the ending really open.

Which is why--as I hinted in my last post--I have done a Thing.

Or. More accurately. I am going to do a thing. And due to being a perfectionist procrastinator, I am sharing this thing with all of you so that I have accountability and will (no doubt a mere few hours before I need it finished) sit it down and actually DO it.

Explanations, because the last paragraph cleared absolutely nothing up:

  • I have gone through my Pinterest boards and semi-randomly selected three pictures. (Well, two pictures and one dialogue prompt.) These were combined into a prompt. See below!
  • Between now and my next post, I will write something based on this prompt!
  • ...annnd I will post the resulting piece for the entirety of the internet to see, I'm reconsidering this plan already. :)

Flash Prompt #1:

(Pictures from c. families, f. dialogue and a. pocketwatches and white rabbits.)

The thing is, though! If this sparks any ideas in your brilliant writerly brains, please go ahead and use it! And then, if you feel like posting your writing on your blog, you can tell me in the comments and I'll put up a link! (If you don't want to post but you did write, tell me in the comments anyway and I'll give you virtual lamingtons.)

...I suppose you'd call this a writerly link-up?

So. Yep. I want to do more flash fiction, and I want to see other people's epic stuff, and I'm hoping to make this a monthly thing. Maybe.

• • • • • • •

What do you think? Hopefully you're intrigued. Will you join me in this adventure? What kind of prompts would you like to see? What direction does this prompt take your mind?

• • • • • • •

My next post will be [*screams because Announcing = Commitment*] next Saturday! or Friday! or whenever the Time Zones decree! In one week, basically. But I'll keep adding links after that, so no pressure. xP

join meeeee

ideas from Pinterest || dialogue: snark

Apparently people have enjoyed my 'ideas from Pinterest' series; the post with explosion-related dialogue prompts is one of the three most popular posts on my blog. Which is awesome. (And disturbing.)

If you haven't read these posts, they're here:

...feel free to check them out. *winks*

And today - you may have guessed it from the title, but shush, you - I have another dialogue prompt post for you!

Snark. (Sarcasm. Witty banter. That stuff. I'm just going to pretend this is a serious category of dialogue prompts.)

........
"Somehow you don't even have to open your mouth to make my head hurt."

"Don't give me attitude. I have one of my own."

"You can't just sit there all day."
"Never underestimate my ability to idle."

"Turns out separate planets wasn't far enough, huh?"

"Never take advice from me."

"There's no need to repeat yourself. I ignored you fine the first time."

Beware: I'm a Writer || or: meet my family!

Everyone knows writers are dangerous people to be around, right? We have the whole "if you annoy me I'll put you in my book and kill you" thing.

Which I have never done. Yet.

But people-watching is a great way to get new characters. Or figure out how your characters would realistically act. Or get hilarious dialogue. Which is what I'm here for today.

Sometimes I overhear things I reeeally want to use in my writing. And, since I don't leave the house that often, most of these things are overheard from my family.

If you're reading this, my dear family... I'm sorry. But you're living with a writer.

things my family have said (that I want to put in a book one day)

Sister 2: Are you asleep?
Me: ...yes.

Brother 2: "Canada's crashing the holiday bus!"
[I refuse to give you any context.]

Sister: Why is there water in my spot? *stabs it with her fork*

Me: ...why are you wearing sunglasses?
Brother 1: these are not sunglasses
Brother 1: these are night vision glasses
Brother 1: they make it look like it's night

Brother 2: I see two stars in a line!

Brother 2: (singing) You make me wanna shout
Kick my heels up and shout
Throw my arms up and shout
                  *trails off* ...and catch them?
Me: ...How?
Brother 2: ...with my hands. I kept those.

Sister 1: Do I have conversation in my eyes??

Mum: New rule. No Batman at the dinner table.
Sister 1: *hands still spread over her face in a 'mask'* *raspy voice* But... I'm Batman.
Mum: No.
Sister 1: ...
Sister 1: *dives under table*
Sister 1: *comes back out, rather disheveled* Batman had to go.
[We'd just seen the trailer for The Lego Batman Movie. Just. the. trailer.]

Mum: What are you doing on the roof?
General sibling group: ...what?
Mum: What are you doing on the roof?

Sister 1: You get too attached to things that are too easily broken.
Brother 2: *clutches his Lego creations protectively*
Brother 2: You used to cry too when it was pack-up time.

Brother 1: Can I borrow your camera? I'll try not to fill it up.
Me: With photos of bugs?
Brother 1: *walking away* *completely seriously* No, dragons.

Brother 2: *into disconnected radio* Got a coffee, mate, got a coffee?
Me: ...
[I don't know how universal it may or may not be, but Aussie truckies open UHF conversations with "Got a copy, mate?"]

Sister 1: My genius is ruined on you.
Me: I think you mean wasted?

Any sibling: There's a bug in my dinner!!
Dad: It's fine. He won't eat much.
[On the other hand, if it's a caterpillar, the answer is "He only tastes like the cabbage, that's all he's ever eaten..."]

Sister 1: She thinks she's the bee's bonnets.

Sister 1: *drinking*
Me: *comes into kitchen*
Sister 1: *drops cup of water* *slaps her hands across her face in her 'mask'*
*raspy voice* ...What do you want?
Me: ...
Me: Don't forget to clean that up.
Sister 1: ...but I'm Batman.
_____

Sister 1 is the drama queen of the family (and the possibility of her reading this post is... higher than I'd like.) Do you have siblings, and do they sometimes say downright hilarious things? Or are you the hilarious one in your family? What's the funniest dialogue you've overheard? (doesn't have to be from your family!) Is this standard Dad behaviour, and do you have any message for Sister 1?? (I suggest stop being such a drama queen, kid, but I suppose I'm biased?)

ideas from Pinterest || theme: EXPLOSIONS

My "ideas from Pinterest" posts have been pretty fun to write. So far there's been:

"Snarky dialogue" is the obvious next step. I'll think about it.

But today - as promised - it's explosions. Coupled with a fair bit of snark.

And in the vein of this theme, let us start with Tony Snark + explosions.

I'm sorry, did I typo and write Tony Snark??
That was obviously an accident

"Technically, it wasn't on fire."
"Of COURSE it wasn't on fire! You completely blew it up!"

"It's only on fire a little bit. You can still use it."

"I said finesse. Do you happen to know the definition of finesse?"

"I'm looking for a place to crash. Mine blew up."

"Do you even know how to drive this thing?"
"Normally I'd lie and say yes, but considering the fact that I almost flew us into that building, I'm going to assume you know the answer."

"Some gifts are better left unopened. I'm particularly referring to the ones that explode."

"The phrase 'Ignore it and it will go away' does not apply to being chased by a dozen cop cars. Trust me on this one."

"I don't go looking for trouble. I just enjoy befriending it."

"...and then I set the fire."
"No."
"But-"
"No fires."
"But my plan is awesome."
[Third character:]"Since when have we accepted pyromaniacs onto this team?"

"Give me one good reason why I should buy you a cart full of fireworks."

"We can't have a crisis! My schedule is already full."

"In my defense, I was left unsupervised."

"So what're you up to?"
"Nothin' dangerous, if that's what you're asking."
"...Our definitions of dangerous must be sliiightly different."

"The results of an explosion are often very curious."

"Small fire! I said to set a small fire! This is not small!"

"Burning a bridge takes too long. I prefer explosives."

For some reason I can NOT find a gif which includes the explosion??
Which is super annoying because I need it for my life.

*****

Okay, so not all of these were specifically about explosions? but you can make them about explosions. And that's all that matters, really.

Do you write about explosions? Do you have suggestions for themes for my next Pinterest ideas posts? Do you write posts at eleven at night? because I don't recommend it

Talk to me about anything! including the fact that apparently Iron Man's arc reactor is triangular in this suit?? I did not know that.

ideas from Pinterest || [hopefully] tragic dialogue!

Today I've got a [brief] collection of dialogue snippets from Pinterest. I've tried to form a theme, but I'm not terribly good with themes, so here they are: potentially/kind-of tragic dialogue snippets.

Of course, you could rebel and use these in an unexpected way, thereby making them completely-not-at-all-heartwrenching. E.g. if your character addressed the first one to a pizza. Or the second one. Or any of them, really.

"I've lost count of the promises I've broken for you."

"No. Not you. Anyone but you."

"This is highly irregular. They shouldn't have feelings."

"You here to finish me off, sweetheart?"

"Daddy, are we the bad guys?"

"You always smile like you're about to cry."

"The best way to keep a prisoner from escaping it to make sure he never knows he's in prison."
- Fyodor Dostoevsky, apparently? No idea who he was, though!

"We've been through a lot together, and most of it was your fault."

"Sometimes memories are the worst form of torture."

"You're not going to lose me, okay? I won't leave y-"

"It hurt once, but I don't feel it any more."

"Freedom doesn't feel like I thought it would."

"If anyone could have saved me it would have been you."

"I'm not sure when I knew you'd never forgive me."

OH I BELIEVE WE WERE TALKING HEARTBEAK??
hERE HAVE SOME QUICKSILVER

If these prompts are depressing, apply them all to food in some way!! don't worry! I promise that next time, my theme will be something along the lines of "EXPLOSIONS!!"

.....

"Battle the monsters in your closet and craft a beautiful poem from their remains."    <-- a little motivation from the CampNaNo emails. Because it's late and I'm tired and can't think of a good way to sign off. (that seems to be the standard situation whenever I'm blogging??)

ideas from Pinterest - for superhero stories!

I didn't mention in my Writer Stag post, but I've recently started writing superhero stories as well as fairy tales and contemporary runaways. ('Superhero' is totally a genre, 'kay??)

So here is the superhero/villain-themed next installment (first post here) of 'ideas from Pinterest'. I have scoured that soul-sucking site for months, gathering the required information/ideas for this semi-series of posts... do not waste my labours.

(does anyone here actually write superhero stories?)

Edit: As Lisa points out in the comments, mixed-gender roommates would be very non-standard. If you want the dating twist - which is not required, it might be nice to have a story without romance - you could have a mixed-gender student share house.

--{well I'm not going to walk there}--
"You can ALL fly and I'm the only one who can't. Can you not argue about who's going to carry me while I'm standing right here??"

--{...insurance rates}--
"You superhero types are constantly driving my insurance rates up with your destruction. I wouldn't complain [much] if you were at least fighting supervillains, but you're usually just fighting each other!"
(definitely the [disguised] superhero's new landlady!)

--{is it possible you had a pre-existing condition?}--
"I volunteered for a super-soldier program and I'm the only one that's shown any abilities in response to the drugs. Now you're trying to tell me I was in the placebo group??"

--{should have picked someone else}--
"You took me hostage for your bank robbery but you should probably have picked aaanyone else. *telekinetically trolls them until they turn themselves in to the police*"

--{terrible at this secret identity thing}--
"Once we caught you climbing in the window of our mutual office?? No, sure, that's a compleeetely plausible reason. If anyone asks, we'll tell them you were here and working hard. With your dorky glasses and crazy broad shoulders and mysterious scrapes and bruises, of course you're just a regular office worker! *coughs*"

--{behind-the-scenes crew, couldn't have done it without you}--
"You're a superhero, which is awesome, but as your best friend that leaves me with a lot of responsibilities. Doing your homework. Forging sick notes from your parents. Fetching bundles of clothes from behind bins in alleys. Carrying a spare costume everywhere. Oh, and the washing. Being your best friend is actually a lot of work?? and I hope you appreciate that."

--{best friends?}--
"No, I don't want a chocolate, I just watched you take them from that girl scout - no, I'm not mad you didn't come to my birthday party, I'm perfectly aware you were in jail, I put you there - yes, I received your gift, and returned it to the museum - that's someone else's coffee, I don't want it and just stOP ACTING LIKE WE'RE BEST BUDDIES OKAY"

--{when your power is public knowledge}--
"I was born with the facial birthmark signifying superpowers and I have to put up with supervillains harrassing me, I shouldn't have to- no, no autographs - you don't approve of superheroes? too bad, lady - I will not demonstrate anything in the shopping centre - all I wanted was eggs would you people leave me alone."

--{maybe would have preferred not to know?}--
"Recently I've gained the ability to tell when someone is lying. You've been my best friend from childhood, but everything you're saying to me - even your name - is a lie. What's up with that??"

--{not the intended outcome}--
"You told me there would be no side effects."

>--{danger levels}--
"I can measure how dangerous people are just by looking at them - regular kid is 1, trained man with an assault rifle would be about 7. You're the new kid at school and you don't look like much but you're a 10??"

--{first time getting shot}--
"Exactly how and when did you find out you're bulletproof?"

--{family dinners}--
"Family dinner night again, and Mum's posted bail (our latest showdown got you arrested, but to be fair, you'd just melted a museum) so we can have - and I quote - 'a civil, sisterly conversation, at the table instead of flying around dressed in spandex'."

Plus a random slightly relevant?? driblet from my recent life:
I was playing chess (circular chess, actually, with three people) and my brother said he should have archers?? So I replaced my bishops with Hawkeye tokens?? Sadly I'm the only one in my family who knows that kind of stuff... so no one said I see what you did there. :( (because there are two Hawkeyes? and the second is Kate Bishop?)

Which of these was your favourite? Do you write superhero stories? Do you want to talk about a completely random thing?? (or maybe circular chess?) (and SOMEONE please tell me you see what I did there ;)
