why I'm quite happy staying at home (+ a few suggestions)

As a graduated homeschooler and introvert who is living with my family, in an remote-ish area with only a handful of COVID cases, I'm quite enjoying this period of staying at home. I'm doing stuff I like, and I have exactly the right amount of social interaction.

None.

Hang on, that's obviously not true. I'm spending time with my family, and I'm talking to people online, and I've even written a few letters.

Actual face-to-face talking time with non-family members: zero hours for, like, going on four weeks?? and I am fine with that.

(Should I be concerned about myself.)

But there's so much to do! So many ways to spend your time! Such fun to be had! So many people to not talk to!

Julia from Lit Aflame posted a collab of 124 Things To Do When You're Exiled At Home. And Emily from The Ones That Really Matter put up a great post featuring such suggestions as Jedi training (this won't be affected by social distancing as hugs are probably against the Jedi code), exploring wardrobes, and becoming obsessively attached to a specific piece of jewellery. (I approve.) Read these! There's some great ideas!

I, on the other hand, have a list of ramblings for today's post. I'm sure any suggestions I might make have already been covered (a list of 124 things won't leave many untouched... at least, not many that are easy to think of.) but I'll see if I can add anything to what is, I'm sure, a popular topic.

Reading

uh. obviously. (This gets its own section.)

My quarantine book list includes the following:
The Copper Gauntlet, The Bronze Key, The Silver Mask (Magisterium #2-4), Holly Black and Cassandra Clare
Leave It to Psmith, P.G. Wodehouse
Muse of Nightmares (Strange the Dreamer #2), Laini Taylor
Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen
The Lost Plot (The Invisible Library #4), Genevieve Cogman

The Scorpio Races, Maggie Stiefvater (reread)
Not If I Save You First, Ally Carter (reread; author recommends for quarantine reading! as MC is definitely ice-olated.) (I'll show myself out.)
Jeeves Stories, P.G. Wodehouse
☐ a couple of Georgette Heyer books I found on Project Gutenberg
☐ and whateeeever books lying around the house might happen to catch my eye

I managed to get a bit of a bundle out of the library before it shut unexpectedly early! Which I'm pleased about. However. Whether I will get around to reading them or not, I do not feel I have enough books.

...that is to say, I miss having an entire library at my disposal

SO. Here are a few places to find books online, for zero dollars:
  • Project Gutenberg. Pros: lots of cool old books! Cons: super. ugly. formatting.
  • Standard Ebooks. Pros: Project Gutenberg, but not ugly! Cons: less titles
  • ManyBooks. Pros: mix of Project Gutenberg titles and self-published titles. Cons: mix of Project Gutenberg titles and self-published titles.
(I've just discovered this site in my old bookmarks and have no memory of using it?? but apparently I did, at least, check it out.)
  • Borrowbox. Pros: digital library where you can borrow new titles (also eAudio)! Cons: uses Adobe Digital Editions, which I loathe.
NOTE: you need to be a member with a library who has Borrowbox! If your local library does not, you can sign up, online, for free, with this library and you'll get access. (If you fill out the form online, you should be fine to ignore all the "present your ID in person" stuff??)
  • Open Library. Pros: a mix of titles, with just an online sign-up. Cons: I'm still new to this one, but... I'm sure I'll find the cons eventually. No one is perfect, especially not people who are offering you free books.

    Non-Reading Things

Learn a language.      I'm on Duolingo, learning Italian! My favourite phrase is non lo so. Alternatively, Transparent Language, which you can get through a library - again, if your local library doesn't have this, you can sign up with this one.

Practise your musical instrument.      I play piano! Do I practise piano? no I do not. Should I? yes. Will I? tomorrow. (I would rather sing? One of my favourite things to do is gather the siblings and sing harmonies. If you love singing harmonies, and hymns in SATB, and all that cool stuff, I want to know :) If you're bored with practising, look up a tutorial for how to rick roll on your instrument of choice!
Alternatively, watch the Aussie YouTubers, TwoSetViolin. I recommend their rating of violin stock photos, or their analysis of the 'fastest' violinist (now with sequel). This is definitely a valid alternative to practising.

Exercise.      Look, before I lose you completely here: I very much dislike it myself. BUT. but but but. There's a great YouTube channel I found called Cardio Beats Fitness, and I'm really inspired. They have routines to songs like You Say by Lauren Daigle, When Can I See You Again by Owl City, Zero and Believer by Imagine Dragons, This Is Me/The Greatest Show/Rewrite the Stars from The Greatest Showman, and a BUNCH others by artists I don't necessarily know, but you might. (I grew up separate from pop music. or any music apart from classical music and the Wiggles, to be entirely honest.)

Listen to music.      I have no doubt you're already doing this! I'd just like to point out that Studio Ghibli mixes such as this one are very very soothing. And good for when you're trying to do some art like those pictures you saw on Pinterest that one time. there are no pictures of my finished products. do not ask. but that's not the Studio Ghibli mix's fault.

Rearrange your room.      And, while you're at it, clean out your stuff. This can feel like such a fresh start. (You've got to start by getting everything out at once, though. That's the way to do it. This is in no way a risky approach.)

Play a slightly different game of chess.      Like this one! (I sketched out the board on a piece of bucher's paper.)

Or this one! (Turns out, throwing your pieces can be used to remove what your opponent is using as a shield... my sister realised this before I did.)

Trawl through kawaiiface.net.      For reasons. (You need these.) Alternatively, textfac.es - I'd say they'd have much the same content, but you'd better make sure.
my sister and I chatting on Messenger. I set her name to table flip.

Train your inner Sherlock Holmes.      On the Science of Deduction reddit, users post pictures of their room/bookshelf/desk/etc, other users see what they can tell about them, and the original user then says how each commenter did. (Am I good at this? no. Does this stop me from pretending I'm Sherlock Holmes or some private detective? also no.)

Write Batfamily fanfics and let me know.      This is how I'm actually spending my time, okay?? reading Batfam fics. It's terrible, and I have no regrets, because the fics are not. also why are the Robins not in Batman movies, this is an injustice.

How have you been spending your time? Have you developed any new hobbies, or picked up some old ones? How are you going with being at home? Are you working from home, or not working at the moment, or still going out to work? Has your family driven you crazy yet, or are you enjoying the time together? And, of course: Homeschoolers vs. public schoolers - who's coping better? And is four weeks of not seeing anyone beyond my family slightly concerning, or entirely valid??

    1. Yesssss, I agree with all of these!!! (TwoSetViolin is SO GREAT, though. <3 <3 BEST YouTube channel XD) haha, and singing harmonies is awesome! You're not alone. :D

Those chess games sound both intriguing and horrible. XD I hope things continue to go well on your end and that the throwing of chess pieces is minimized. ;)

      1. *high five for TwoSetViolin fans* Do you play violin, Nicole? (I don't, but I now know a few important things! like that you can't just 1-2-3-4 your fingers over the strings and look like you're playing xD)

I hope things go well for you too, and that your homeschooling experience goes smoothly!

      1. Wow, Julian, it's so cool that your family is that into chess! If you try these versions, do let me know how they went!!

(To be honest, I like them because I am NOT particularly good at regular chess, and I figure if my opponent is bamboozled we're at least on level ground, so I'm interested in hearing whether Actual Chess Players enjoy them xD)

    3. Former homeschooler, soon-to-be-former college student — I was doing horribly at the start because I missed my friends and couldn't remember how to make myself an actual schedule. I'm doing better now (mainly because I've downgraded from three million things to do, plus five big things to just two big things and three medium things), but I'm about to actually have free time, so . . . we'll see what happens. xD

      1. Free time and a heavily-pruned To-Do list would definitely lighten things up, Sarah! ;D And the instant I finished homeschooling I forgot how to schedule too?? so I get that. I hope your studying's going well for you now! Do you know when college will open back up?

    4. My time is spent relatively the same way actually, I've just got more time to work at my jobs that haven't been cancelled, and write, and do normal boring adult things. I think I'd like quarantine a bit better if I could have more free time to work on things I haven't had the chance to touch, but I've just filled my time with working more sadly. :( BUT I am also gonna be hella bored with just going to work and hanging out at home right quick, so I'd be happy if we could get things back to normal faster.
These are great ideas though! Love the Studio Ghibli mix! I'll keep them in mind if I ever get a spare moment!

(The Studio Ghibli mix is great for housework and cooking, I find!)

    5. Okay, but I can TOTALLY relate with being content with zero social interaction. I'm one of those people who are currently still out working, and WISHING I could stay home away from people. xD

Thanks so much for linking to my post! I'm glad you enjoyed it and I don't think any of us have an excuse to NOT come out of quarantine as a Jedi, honestly. XD

And that "I miss my books" gif is such a mood. xP

I enjoyed your quarantine post and thought others should have fun reading it too, Emily! <3

    6. I'm a reclusive country-dweller, so I don't feel the effects of quarentine so much. I feel sorry for social people with small yards, though.

I must not let my father see the three player chess set. He'll want one.
Learning a language is a good idea, one I keep meaning to do. My brothers are learning French, and I'd like to continue with German and Gaelic.

ooh, Gaelic! That's cool! And I started learning German at one point, mainly because I was fascinated by how it connected with English (and by the fact that nouns have capitals?? why is English not interesting like that)

    7. I enjoyed your post so much. Reading-- I love "Northanger Abbey!" You should definitely put that one as a high priority. And of course, P. G. Wodehouse is unparalleled, esp. "Leave It to Psmith!" You're soooo right about being an introvert in times like these. I love the extra time alone. I have been practicing piano as well (virtual recital in less than a week). And I have got to try that Sherlock Holmes thing. I'm a big fan (books, not shows. Ugh.) I'm home-schooled, but I usually have a weekly meeting which is now online. But I've been coping well. :-) Thanks for the post!

      1. You have a virtual recital? That's so cool! My siblings are doing virtual lessons, but a recital must be a whole new stage (stage, heh. [sorry.])

I'll bump Northanger Abbey up my TBR!!

Thanks for commenting, o anonymous! (you're not like the usual anonymous commenters, so I'm pleased to have you here ;D )

    8. Why do I really, really want to play hell chess now? For some reason, choosing your pieces randomly sounds like the best idea ever.
I'm still going to work, and life is pretty much the same as usual, but I can't go to dance classes and I'm missing being able to see my friends normally. However, our internet provider has been giving us 10GB extra internet every week, which means we've been able to watch some movies online (since we're in the country, we've got satellite internet and usually can't download movies).
I've been learning Auslan! And finishing off my course, which was online anyway, so I'm not suffering much there.

      1. Do you get three queens or fifteen pawns... it's literally the luck of the draw.

That's EXACTLY the same as us, though! Satellite internet (with no capability for movies, usually), with an extra 10GB/week for quarantine! (I don't think town people realise, necessarily, what country internet is like... but the extra is certainly appreciated.)

Where are you learning Auslan through, Chelsea? I wouldn't mind trying for a basic understanding myself!

    9. I get you! I really enjoy just being at home and honestly I kind of like the excuse. I'm not sure if it's concerning that I don't feel the need to interact with very many people? But I do have my family so I'm not completely isolated. I don't think I would do well in solitary confinement for weeks on end. But who knows?
I LOVE TO SING IN HARMONY WITH MY FAMILY. We sing hymns sometimes, but mostly we sing Broadway stuff. We have been trying to learn "Stay, I Pray You" from Anastasia. I really like singing "In the Bleak Midwinter" in harmony. It's gorgeous.
Also I miss my library. Thankfully there are books in my house, but I can't just read whatever I want anymore. I have been delving into more classics though, which is actually kind of nice. I am being forced to read all the books that I was going to get around to AT SOME POINT but kept putting off because shiny new books kept popping up.
Wow, that chess board looks amazing! I think it would kill my brain to try to play on it though. Still very cool.
I am still working, but not as much as I was before. I work at a bakery and business has been really slow since we reopened for take-out orders.
I want to say that it's not concerning to be content with only seeing your family for four weeks straight, but I'm not honestly sure? I have heard a lot of people struggling with quarantine, and I am not sure if there is something wrong with the fact that I don't mind it or if we are just different.
      Great post!

      1. Maybe those of us who were homeschooled are more comfortable just being at home with family?? (*every extroverted homeschooler stands up and opens their mouth indignantly*) Let's just say we're completely normal and simply have a good relationship with our families, Wheels...

Harmonies are SUCH a family activity!! We enjoy classic hymns like "How Great Thou Art" and "As the Deer", but also songs like "Sound of Silence" and "Scarborough Fair". Broadway songs would be so fun! (Actually! My brother and I independently picked "You Will Be Found", so if we can manage to learn that...)

A bakery sounds like an awesome place to work! It would smell so good (or does it become overwhelming when you work there??) I hope business picks up for you soon.

    10. Dude. Thank goodness I am not the only one kind of enjoying this epic craziness. And no social interaction beyond family and online friends???? I'm beginning to wonder if I am an introvert because I am in actual HEAVEN right now. I also tackled the cleaning of the room during the first week f quarantine. I have now moved on to watching copious amounts of Disney+ and questioning my existence... *nervous sweating*

ALSO ALSO ALSO. I WANT TO PLAY THESE VERSIONS OF CHESS. Now I just need to dwindle my family into playing it with me..... (The first-person chess looks amazing, but there are FIVE people in my family, so clearly there will have to be some adjustments made...)

Also... who broke Chess??? Sounds like fun chaos. :) Also I want to be Sherlock Holmes'd!!!! I need to check into this Reddit thing.
