forging the Fellowship | how could I NOT do this tag

Julia at Lit Aflame created a new tag (*cough* in 2018) and it's LotR themed. So. Even though she tagged me approximately 365 years ago, I'm still going to do it, and with thanks. :D

So for this tag, I "forge my own Fellowship" out of book characters. Which is cool! I get to pick my own party! (To try to cut down on the infinite possibilities [and also, once I drag these characters out of their storyworlds, awkward explanations] I'm going to limit myself to characters from books that are at least partly fantasy.

The Questions

1. [The Ring Bearer]: If you could choose, which of the four races would you be: Elf, Dwarf, Human, or Hobbit?

Hobbit. Their lives are sO SOFT AND DOMESTIC. Lovely rambling houses and green hills and good food. Parties and soft curly hair and bare feet and fireworks. Books and armchairs and fireplaces.

Yes, the occasional hobbit gets picked for the Death Trials (aka holding the One Ring), but that was, like, two in the the history of hobbits?? I'll be fine.

(*rereads question* ...wait, am I supposed to be the ring bearer? NOOO I wanted to be a regular hobbit!!)

Fine. If I had to be the ring bearer, I'd rather be an elf. (Even though canonically only hobbits can handle holding the One Ring.) Because elves can run fast and I can't imagine trying to cross Middle Earth on hobbit legs. Ugh.

2. [Gandalf the Grey]: A wise/powerful elder/mentor character:

ooh. This one is HARD. Probably the hardest of all the Fellowship roles I have to fill?? because it has to be someone who can handle ridiculous amounts of sarcasm, stubbornness, and probably a whole heap of bickering.

ahahaa I'm going to say Halt from Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan.

he'd be so unhappy to be here.

also this is off to a bad start sarcasm-wise

3. [Aragorn]: A character with good survival skills:

Jude from The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black.

...at least, she develops good survival skills (beyond the obvious stabby ones) by learning that sarcasm is NOT a good survival skill and sometimes it's best to stay quiet? (which is admittedly a logical thing to do! and I should make my WIP's characters learn that! buuuut I like my sarcasm so... xD)

4. [Boromir]: A character who makes mistakes, but has a good heart:

Callum from the Magisterium series by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. The exact situation's kinda spoilery, but I will say that he has list with An Evil Overlord Would Do This/An Evil Overlord Would Not Do This columns, and mentally tallies up his behaviour, which proves that 1. he has problems; 2. he has a good heart.

5. [Gimli]: A stubborn character:

There are SO MANY characters who could go here (it's a trait that goes with being excessively sarcastic, I feel??), but I'd like to have Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones. Of course, Howl would insist on coming too (and contributing to the level of stubborn), so I get a bonus wizard. xD

6. [Legolas]: A character who is talented:

Artemis Fowl from his titular series by Eoin Colfer. And if you are unfamiliar with Artemis, wHY. (Granted, the series gets even crazier as it goes along, but it's hilarous and fun? also everyone dies at least once, so... Boromir! am I joking am I not you'll never know) Artemis is a literal genius who specializes in evil plotting (and dabbles in writing under terrible pun pseudonyms). I originally had him under #4/Boromir, but?? he's the most talented fictional character I can think of off the top of my head. xD

7. [Peregrin Took]: A character who at first seems useless, but ends up surprising you:

......Sage from The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A Nielsen. Everyone - everyone - underestimates him, so I assume he seems useless when you first meet him. (He's not trying to stop that impression, either. He enjoys the bit where his plans come together and his enemies stand there with their mouth opening and shutting uselessly.)

8. [Meriadoc Brandybuck]: A character who is small/not very strong, but has great courage:

Irene from The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman. She's a human librarian who jumps between worlds - which are sometimes infested with fae/dragons/chaos magic - to collect books and I just? love that?

9. [Samwise Gamgee]: A character who is extremely loyal and doesn’t give up:

Grey, the prince's guard/best friend from A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kimmerer. He is the Mum Friend and is likely to be the only person in this list who won't cause trouble. (Except maybe Sophie. I feel like they'd team up to Mum everyone else into line.)

Well, that was fun! but also I think if my Fellowship manages to defeat Evil, it'll be an accidental side affect of their bickering.

Villain: would you all sTOP your iNCESSANT sMART-ALEC COMMENTS I am the vILLAIN FEAR ME-
Character A: you know telling us that is the weakest way of showing how fear-worthy you are?
Character B: oh and you would know, seeing as you used to be a villain-
Villain: excuse me, I was talking-
Character A, with an evil glint: just be grateful you never came up against me, B-
Character C: you're both literal children
Characters A and B: *insulted glares* *may be about to kill C, no one knows*
Character D: guys can we not do this in front of the villain
Villain: exactly, I will-
Character E: they're being ridiculous-
Character C: exactly-
Character E: you were included in that statement
Characters A-H: *dissolve into bickering chaos* *with some physical wrestling*
Villain, left standing alone and ignored: I quit

actually. actually actually. I just realised I want to do this tag but in a non-fantasy Heist Society kind of way?? put together a team. To probably rob a crime boss's personal art collection or something, and after that get hired out to a secrative spy agency for a specialist mission. CAN I STEAL A TAG FROM MYSELF.

Which of these books have you read and which characters are your favourite? pls scream about any/all of them with me. unless you're screaming "KILL [MC]" in which case I kindly request you take your negativity elsewhere, good sir. Anyone here wishing they could be a hobbit?

And do you think I have possibly made a tactical error in picking so many sarcasm-based characters, because I do.

  1. Oh, hello, I was reading this thinking "I need to steal this tag" and then I was like, "Oh, look, I'm tagged! How convenient!" So, thanks for that. xD

I've read some of these, and most of the ones I haven't are on my TBR, so that's cool. Also, smart movie, bringing Sophie to get a bonus Howl. And YES, Irene and Halt and Grey! High-key some of my faves, as are Sophie and Howl of course.

I also spent way too much time trying to figure out who's talking when. I'm guessing Character A is Artemis, and I feel like Character E might be Halt, but that's all I got.

Also, you could probably make a new tag based on this one. *shrugs*

    1. Hope you enjoyed the tag, Sarah - I enjoyed reading your answers to it! (and adding to my TBR, but am I complaining? no)

The "Character A/B/C" conversation was meant to be theoretical, not specific, but you're absolutely right?? Character A is 100% Artemis?? and E is Halt. Evidently my subconscious was having a good time writing that conversation and forgot to let me in on what it was doing...

  2. Having a fellowship of literary characters would be so much fun! I did a similar tag about three years ago, and while most of the fellowship were book characters, I couldn't resist throwing in C3P0 and R2D2 in place of Legolas and Gimli.
I'm afraid many of the characters you mention are unfamiliar to me. But Irene sounds awesome! I see I should read the Invisible Library.
And yes, I think I would enjoy being a hobbit.

    1. C3PO and R2D2 would make a MARVELOUS bickering Legolas and Gimli, Blue! and they've got the height difference down as well xD

I think we writers are all hobbits at heart??

  3. HA!!! Scarcasm fellowship that saves the world almost accidentally while bickering. I NEED THIS KIND OF STORY

  4. This is glorious! And YES, of course I want to be a hobbit.
Many thanks for tagging me, dear Jem! I look forward to creating my own fellowship- and we shall see how functional they end up being together. I am very glad that your fellowship includes Sophie. She will keep the others in line.
    Great post!

    1. Sophie can handle Howl, so she can handle everyone else in this list xP Enjoy the tag, Professor!

  5. Oh, this is a WONDERFUL tag. And I think you're going to have quite the...argumentative group on your hands. Good luck wrangling them all XD

    Replies
    1. Oh no, Becky, I have no intention of trying to wrangle this group: on reflection, that's going to be Sophie's job. xD

  6. You can totally steal a tag from yourself and do a non-fantasy heist team thing. At least, I WILL READ IT. Reading this was hilarious. I think the sarcasm levels are perfect?? They are about what the sarcasm levels are among my siblings?? And we are all still alive??
I need a book about this Fellowship you've put together, actually. Please. I wish to see Sophie and Halt butting heads...and then KEEPING ON BUTTING HEADS. Because they're Halt and Sophie.
And I want many pages of that dialogue with the villain. That too was hilarious.

    1. Sibling sarcasm levels are my goal for fictional characters, honestly...

Unfortunately I am 103% certain I'm not a strong enough writer to wrangle these characters into a story?? (I have created a monster I cannot contain.) You'll have to write Sophie and Halt's meeting instead, Sarah. xD

  7. Uh, no, sarcastic characters is not a tactical error. I mean, take a look at Doctor Strange. He WON because he was so annoyingly sarcastic. "I HAVE COME TO BARGAIN!"

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. *gasps* I didn't think of Doctor Strange, Sarah! So being annoyingly sarcastic CAN be a valid tactical choice. (My characters are pleased to hear it...)

  8. Grey is SO THE MUM FRIEND. Ugh he deserved better the entire time. And I totally adore Jude and her cunning. 💛💛

    1. Every fictional character should have a Grey-friend! And Jude is the kind of person I would not want as an enemy... I'd never see her coming.

  9. How have I not heard of the Invisible Library before??? IT SOUNDS AMAZING. *adds to TBR*

Sounds like a fun crew you've got there XD

    1. The Invisible Library is a great read! My library had it shelved as Adult Fantasy, but it wasn't dry like I expect from non-YA books. xP (There is occasional language, though, with one instance of "strong language" per book, from memory.)

  10. This tag is amazing, and I am 100% going to steal it (I hope you don't mind). Also, Halt being sarcastic is the bestest. :)

    1. Sure, go ahead and steal it, Samantha! And everyone needs to appreciate Halt. :)

  11. YES SOPHIE! I aspire to be Sophie. Also a hobbit. I would like to be a hobbit and eat lots of good foot and walk around barefoot on soft green grass and avoid Sackville Bagginses at all costs. Looks like you have a stellar fellowship here. They're definitely going to defeat Sauron via sarcasm XD

    ReplyDelete

    1. Being a hobbit is the ultimate life goal, right?? SO COSY. (Except for the Sackville Bagginses. But I suppose Lobelia is a small price to pay.) Unless we're Sophie and passive-aggressively clean people's stuff and snark them. My Fellowship is definitely going to defeat Sauron, Erik... or at least make him wish we'd stayed home and left him alone. xD
